چکیده

0957+561 is the first gravitational lens system to be discovered and first for which a time delay was measured. Because the system is unusually rich in observables such as image positions, fluxes, VLBI structure, and polarization it has been modelled quite extensively. However, since it resides in a cluster providing substantial convergence, the velocity dispersion of the lensing galaxy is an important component to models. We have measured this dispersion to be 288± 9 km s−1 (1-sigma), which implies a Hubble constant of 72±7 km s Mpc (1-sigma) according to the preferred FGS model of Grogin and Narayan, and 70± 7 km s−1 Mpc−1 (1-sigma) using the SPLS model. The unknown velocity dispersion anisotropy of the central galaxy produces an additional uncertainty of perhaps 15% or more. We see no variation in dispersion with position to a radius of ±3. In addition to a galaxy from the background cluster at z = 0.5, our slit serendiptously picked up a galaxy at z = 0.448, and two galaxies which may be part of a background cluster at a redshift of

An Estimation of H from Keck Spectroscopy of the Gravitational Lens System 0957 + 561

We present long-slit LRIS/Keck spectroscopic observations of the gravitational lens system 0957 + 561. Averaged over all of our data, the rest-frame velocity dispersion v of the central lens galaxy G1 is v = 279 12 km s ?1. However, there appears to be a signiicant decrease in v as a function of distance from the center of G1. Within 0: 00 2 of the center of G1, we nd the average v = 316 14 km ...

Constraints on H0 from the Central Velocity Dispersions of Lens Galaxies

We employ Schwarzschild’s method of orbit modeling to constrain the mass profiles of the central lens galaxies in 0957+561 and PG 1115+080. We combine the measured central projected stellar velocity dispersions of these galaxies with the self-similar radial profiles of the rms velocity and of the Gauss-Hermite moment h4 observed in nearby galaxies for 0 <∼ R <∼ 2Reff . For 0957+561, we find a 1...

An estimate of H ◦ from Keck spectroscopy of the gravitational lens system 0957

We present long-slit LRIS/Keck spectroscopic observations of the gravitational lens system 0957 + 561. Averaged over all of our data, the rest-frame velocity dispersion σ v of the central lens galaxy G1 is σ v = 279 ± 12 km s −1. However, there appears to be a significant decrease in σ v as a function of distance from the center of G1 that is not typical of brightest cluster galaxies. Within 0....

Magnification Ratio of the Fluctuating Light in Gravitational Lens 0957

Radio observations establish the B/A magnification ratio of gravitational lens 0957+561 at about 0.75. Yet, for more than 15 years, the optical magnfication ratio has been between 0.9 and 1.12. The accepted explanation is microlensing of the optical source. However, this explanation is mildly discordant with (i) the relative constancy of the optical ratio, and (ii) recent data indicating possib...
